Child-and
family-centered Hospital Care in the Balkans
Hospitalization of children in the
Balkans continues to be a traumatic experience for
children and their families. Drs. Bettina Schwethelm and
Cecilia Capello from FPH and the Director of the Child
Life Department of the Johns Hopkins University
Hospital, Patrice Brylske, and Erin Munn have worked
to bring changes to the Balkans.
A trainer curriculum on child- and
family-centered care has been completed and a first
trainer course conducted in May 2010 in
Serbia with two hospital teams from Macedonia
participating. This
initiative is supported by funding from Oak Philanthropy

Adolescent
Like-Skills Education, Bosnia & Herzegovina 2006-2008
The
Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Programme was
implemented between 2006 and December 2008 by the United
Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Partnerships in
Health.
The
programme goal was to empower the youth of Bosnia &
Herzegovina to become free decision-makers about their
sexual and reproductive health, through education,
information and enhancement of youth-friendly SRH
services, dedicated and adjusted for young people. This
has been achieved through the introduction of innovative
Information Centres in Banja Luka, Bihac and Mostar,
initiating peer education presentations and media
promotions, engaging public health experts, local
government and NGOs and, importantly, community
awareness events to reach the wider population and
reverse what was historically a culturally sensitive
issue.
